This marks one of the best trips I’ve taken in Lebanon. As I always do, I take my family with me in all my trips, we pack some sandwiches, fill the tank with gas, and start driving until we reach an unplanned destination.
This time we reached Chouaneh!
What’s so special about Chouaneh?
Everything! It’s about an hour and a half from Beirut. Once you get to the riverside road, it’s definitely a risky yet beautiful ride. When you arrive, technically you’re on a mountain and you have to go downhill all the way through very rough dangerous roads to reach the lake.
It’s an adventure indeed, but when you reach there, it’s mesmerizing! You have to make sure you arrive early morning because you don’t want it to get dark on the way up, you could easily lose your way especially that there’s no cellular reception – barely – and GPS doesn’t work as expected in the valley.
What made it an adventure is that we arrived at 2PM, took us a couple of hours to reach the lake and after spending a little time there, completely isolated and with noone around, it started getting dark so we ran our way up and it got dark! We got lost – typical. And you really don’t want to get lost there, there are wolves, wild pigs, and all sorts of wild animals of which we encountered a wolf! What helped is that we were holding sticks and we were a pack but the wolf was alone so he simply ran away. Still we were scared shitless!
The whole experience is unforgettable you should definitely go check it out.
